Amateur Radio is about radio communications (with an emphasis on "radio"). It is not easy to give a brief answer when asked what amateur radio is all about. There are so many aspects to this hobby that we can only describe it by way of examples, much like the story of the 5 blind men, each holding on to one part of an elephant and able to describe only what he perceives. I always recommend questioners to view a very good introductory video by the RSGB. However, when I am in a lighthearted mood, I will recommend them to watch this instead :) Just like one of the 5 blind men, when reflecting on amateur radio one evening, I made the following map of my view of amateur radio. More than 30 years ago, I used to doze off during the microwave and field theory lectures, so I had a lot to catch up and relearn before I became a ham. It's funny how interesting a subject can become when you don't have to pass exams or rely on it to make a living. So I've spent the past few years relearning various aspects of RF engineering. I am a member of the Singapore Amateur Radio Transmitting Society SARTS. Here you can find my QRZ Profile.
