I also enjoy repairing old test and measurement equipment. With a keen eye, you will get to appreciate the effort (or lack of) made by the engineers who designed the equipment. Being a person who feels that well designed and built test equipment deserve a long service life, I maintain a "sick bay" area for the sick ones, and repair them whenever time permits.

This endeavour has yielded much knowledge to me. The prerequisites for this hobby are a keen interest in hardware design, an inquisitive mind, and a hunger for test equipment that you can't afford.

You may obtain manuals for these "boat anchors" from various sources. If you need the original printed manuals, then you have to part with your hard earned cabbages. On the other hand, there are many sources on the web from which you may download scanned manuals FOC. Most HP and Tek manuals are available in this manner. If you are looking for manuals for Japanese made equipment, you are in for a tough time. Same goes for HP equipment built by YHP (Yokogawa-HP), mainly LCR and RF component testers.
