Since I had the unit dismantled, I opened up the HV DC generator for picture taking. The HV DC generator has been faulty for some time, and it has resisted my repair efforts. Reason is that there are no schematics. From looking at the organization of the unit, I guess that the transformer on the top right is used to supply operational power to the unit. Somewhere within the white harness is the line that samples the output of the variac, so that the HV DC setpoint may be varied. The actual method of HV generation is by driving the transformer at the left, whose secondary drives a voltage multiplier arrangement, which you can see in the next picture.
