The fluffy stuff at the bottom edge is actually decomposed sponge. I heard that the photocells can fail. Fortunately, mine are OK. Very smart bridge circuit. Not a single microprocessor or gate in sight. That part of the manual which explains the nulling method is worth rereading. In those days, even the wire colours were specified in the harness diagram, e.g. the wire to the right of the blue one is "937" - white body, orange and purple stripes.
