My friend james 9V1WW decided to turn on his Kenwood TS850 after some time of disuse. To his dismay, the display came on for only a while and then went dead. Before I attempted the repair, I googled and found that this is a common fault.

James also brought the original manual, but I noted that some schematics were missing, especially the parts pertaining to the display board :(

Anyway, with a brave heart and crossed toes (easy to do, because I wear flip flops in the workshop), I removed the covers and the 4 screws securing the front panel to the body.

In order to safely flip down the front panel, you have to elevate the rig's body. This is to prevent straining any of the ribbon cables as you can see.
